Our name, higarden, is the friendly wave of a neighbor looking up from the garden to say hi.
And, as one who talks to trees, most mornings you'll find me mug-in-gloved-hand whispering, 'hi, garden!'
Of course the name works in other ways too.
how it began
Between my gangly limbs, mosquito magnetism, and sensitive skin, I'm not surprised that I had a severe reaction to poison ivy. It had not crossed my mind that it's irritating oil could travel secondhand, by way of nothing more than petting Grace in the backyard. The prospect of constant exposure sent me in search of gardening gloves that would, at the very least, keep urushiol, the oily resin behind the rash, off my forearms.
What I found was disappointing. Bulky fits, stiff fabric, one-weekend lifespans, zero touch sensitivity. They were so uncomfortable I'd use any excuse to take them off; only to need see poison ivy 5 seconds later. And on top of that, nitrile (that dip coating on big box gloves) is not eco-friendly, it is a petroleum-based material that takes over a century to break down in landfills. My millennial heart broke each time I bought them and threw them away. Dude.
That’s why I started higarden: to give gardeners the peace of mind they deserve. Our gloves fit well, feel comfortable, and look good but more importantly, they’re reliable protection for gardeners. And, you can throw em in the wash without fear of them coming out the other side feeling crispy.
